Rough Draft 1

In Inventing the University the author goes into talking about writing and basic writing problems. It talks about how to write and what approach to go about writing. The writer when writing must feel as if they are one with the audience for the better piece because the audience is the one that’s going to be reading it. When it comes to writing there are two ways a writer can take while writing. The first way is the base prose. Base prose is the writer just writing for themselves to get what they are thinking down. The second way is based prose. Based prose is writing in the reader’s mind.

A writer can get together what they have to say around what they and the reader shares.  The writer must connect with the reader and feel what they feel. They must connect with the reader and the audience to get a feel of what to write and how to write. He believes that based prose writers are better because of writers constructing what they have to say around the reader. He then goes into saying that writers must take on the position of being an insider because that being both inside an established and powerful discourse. The problem with students doing this is that it makes them deny what is reality and that is that the professor really has al the power in the classroom.

The overall purpose of him writing this text was for the reader who wants to become a better writer to learn and to know what to do to get to that point. It is also for high school to college students and is to help them. The article itself did affect me as a reader as it really gave me a big cheat code to writing, I say that because it was never known if my writing was good when I wrote it but now if I was to write from an Insider’s standpoint then it has to be good.

In this text, the author goes into how to become a better writer. He goes into what makes a writer a good writer and what to do to get to that point. As in the text he talks about there being two types of writing which are base and based prose. To be a good writer one would have to be an insider, think of himself as the audience. I agree with the author in every way except where he was saying the teacher is in power. Really it’s the student who is in power as the student controls what grade they get. The teacher is the one the grades it but it is up to the student on what grade they get.

Throughout this article, the author has more of a calm, informal tone. He is just trying to get his information off. His tone really did support his point and what he was trying to get off as if he was obnoxious then I really wouldn’t have read it at all. He put it in a tone and used simple vocabulary for the most part so the reader could understand it. He puts himself in the reader’s viewpoint as writing this so that the reader’s would read it.

In Inventing the Univesity, the author David Bartholomae uses Logos in this text as his evidence to back what he was saying. I say that because he goes more off of logic to convince the students in what he is writing about. When he goes in about how you have to put yourself in the shoes of a reader and have to be an insider to be a good writer, well that is kind of logic and common sense. Only because the readers are the ones that are going to be reading what you are writing, you have to take the view of a reader so it is readable.

What I learned from a close examination of Inventing the University was that the author was very right in what he was saying. At first, when I read this article, I did not agree with him at all as I thought that all you had to have was an imagination. It sounded like crap that you had to be an insider to become a better writer. But then as I analyze the text and actually took in what was being written it actually started to make sense and even help me a little bit. In order to be good at writing then I would have to put myself in the shoes of who was reading it, to see what they wanted.

Inventing the University really doesn’t relate to me as a student. When I am writing it is different as I have imagination and brains and with that, you can write and do anything. There is no limit to what can be done. The imagination part attracts the readers and the brains are what keep the reader as I don’t sound stupid and they know that I know what I am talking about. But reading this really did help me as it tells me what to do in order to get past this level and maybe on to the next. With the level that I am at now, I know that I will have to follow and use what David was saying in order to get past this current class that I am in. Not only does this apply to this current class but this applies to all my classes and coursework.

My professors aren’t really going to give me a good grade and want to read my work if I don’t put myself as an Insider of the professor’s mindpoint. If I do that then I will know what it is that they are looking for. I will also know how they look for it. If I know that then there is no question if I will pass these courses and there will be no question what I will pass it with. It is almost as if I am grading myself to a standpoint.

Reflective Essay Rough Draft 1

Introduction

Throughout this course there are a lot of things that I’ve done well and not many things that I have struggled with. There were few to close to not any things that I struggled with when it came to this course. The first thing that I struggled with is keeping up to date with assignments, there was always something due everyday before we got the class at 8 in the morning. I am use to everything being due at midnight and not that early in the day. The other thing that I struggled with is and was the Multimodal project, this project is different from anything else I have ever done before and is something new. It is just different and that is why I am struggling with it. These issues were challenging to me only because it was something that I was use to very much and was something that was new. This course has impacted the quality of my writing a lot as I am writing way more than I am use to. I am use to writing something that is due every other week but with this course something is always due which improved my writing skills. What I will do to work on these issues is to try and do one of these projects like the multimodal on my own just so I can get use to doing them and get a better feel for them. My writing skills as a whole as improved as in the quality and the quantity of my writing. The strengths that I have as a writer is the ability to keep writing and the ability to stretch wording to make my pages longer. My biggest strength when it comes to writing is my imaginations, it is big to have a big imagination as it is hard to write without one. These strengths have been shown in this class when it comes to long papers that require 6 pages or 8 to 10 pages and the ability to meet the requirements.

Rhetorical Analysis

What I learned from the rhetorical analysis is that it is when the reader analyzes a text and breaks it down describing everything in it. This is different from other forms of writing as it is a more intense more detailed summary. The writer of the rhetorical analysis has to break down the text deeply by explaining what the text is about, the reason for writing the text and the audience to who the writer was writing the text for. Analysis plays a big role when it comes to other types of essays in college as when you are writing an essay with is mostly going to be about a text so you have to break it down in order to get a decent grade. There wasn’t anything that I struggled with when it came to the rhetorical analysis. The one big thing that was done well when it came to the rhetorical analysis was breaking down the text good and describing the text almost as if I were the one who wrote.

Exploratory Essay

What I learned from the Exploratory essay is that when I am exploring careers in the future what all I need to do when it comes to doing background checks. It also taught me a lot about the profession that I want to go in which is something that has to with law enforcement. Exploratory essay is different from other forms of writing as the writer themselves chooses what they want to write based off themselves. Then the writer researches what they want to write about and writes about it. It was very difficult not to take a position on the topic as I was the one who chose the topic. It was very hard to do; it is like asking a person what they want for breakfast and then asking the person did they like what they choices was for breakfast. It is difficult for the person to say they don’t like the choices if they were the ones who picked what the options was. I really don’t know what function exploration plays in other essay’s in college other than one must be open to different ideas. The only thing that one can benefit from exploration is how to not pick a side when it comes to writing a piece of writing that requires one not to pick a side. The one thing that I did struggle with that I think most other people struggled with was not picking a side or not being biased when it came to write an exploratory piece. The thing that I did well was following the directions and not picking a side which was the difficult thing to do. That and being able to pick a topic which was able to go the length with the page requirement.

Research Essay

What I learned from the research essay was that if there is a topic that one is researching not only is it good to have 3 main argument but it is good to have a response for what counterarguments one might have for your main arguments. This is different from other forms of writing like the exploratory essay as you are picking a side. You are picking a side and sticking to it and answer questions to what the counter arguments to the side that you are picking. It was not very difficult to find information on the topic that I chose as my topic was a very conservatory topic that is very relevant over the past couple of decades and has a lot of information and stances to it. The function that research plays in other types of essays in college is a hugh role as in college one is going to have to write a piece. When writing that piece not only do you have to stick to the stance that you are taking or stick to the point that you are writing but you have to convince whoever is reading it to take that stance as well. I did not struggle with anything when it came to the research essay other than not having my essay peer reviewed and having to do that myself. That things that I did very well was everything when it came to this assignment.

Multimodal Project

What I learned from the multimodal project is that is basically a visual to a research essay. It a visual that is a few to close to no words written. More of a visual demonstration. It is different from other forms of writing as it doesn’t have written words like your usual written piece. It wasn’t very difficult to find media to use as again my topic is a very relevant issue in today’s time. What I struggled with is how to do the voice over and make it present by itself. What I did well was finding the media and images to use for this presentation.

Conclusion

After completing this course what I wished I had done different was keeping up with my assignments at the beginning of the course and coming to class more consistent. After completing this course the thing that I am most proud of is my improvement throughout the course and it preceded through the semester. After this course these assignments reflects a lot of what I will face outside this course as during this course I faced almost all the types of writing that is important in future for time to come and for me to pass other courses. I will apply all this knowledge a lot for all my future classes when it comes to writing pieces as I have ideas to what to follow in my head and on what pattern to take to writing. For someone who is taking this course in the future my one advice to them would be to keep up with the assignments, follow the directions and ask questions when confused. I say this because all these steps help me become successful in this course.

Research rough draft 1

                Rough Draft 1

Wherever there is good there is also bad in the world and when there is bad then there has to be someone to help stop the bad from happening. If there is not someone to stop the bad from happening in a place or region then there is a bunch of chaos and things are torn to shred and close to nobody is safe. When there are laws in place of certain kinds then there has to be someone to go out and get those who break the laws and help keep the laws in place and enforce them. Well those people who keep laws in place and enforce them are police officers and law enforcement.

There are many different versions when it comes to law enforcement but they all do the same thing when it all comes down to it at the end of the day, all of them have one job and that is to protect the citizens and enforce laws. When it comes to security guards to police officers and even to the top of them all which are the fbi and fbi agents, at the end of the day they all have one job and that is to get those who do crimes and to help prevent those who want to do crimes from doing crimes. Their job and goal at the end of the day is to help make the nation a better place to be for other citizens to live their lives. They are there to help the everyday day to day is safer as a whole and things run smoothly. The higher one is when it comes to their position in law enforcement the more power they have and the more gateway they have to things. The highest that one could be is a fbi agent and the lowest is a security guard. The higher one is in ranks the more respect one would receive. Now when it comes to things happening to any levels of law enforcement the same thing happens.

Now when it comes to law enforcement and police officers, they are humans too and all humans make mistakes and with mistakes they are all always avoidable with the right things set in place. There are some changes that should be made when it comes to police and law enforcement when it comes to them. There should be changes to training and the perspective and the way we treat law enforcement. It can be argued that what is in place is already good and in shape and nothing needs to or has to change about what is in place.

Authority and police brutality over minorities and African Americans has gotten worse and worse over the years. When one has a badge they are protected by the government and that means everything that does falls back onto the government either good or bad. But most of the things that have fallen back on the government that have caught the attention of national news have been bad and brutal over the past Four to five decades. It is dating back all the way from the civil rights time but we’re going to skip past that until after that when everyone had equal rights and no segregation and there was still authority brutality. The first encounter that really caught the national news was the beating of Rodney King.

Now this was the only case that authorities really got punished in but wasn’t the last of authority brutality. As father in time we go the more we see authority brutality and the more that the authorities get away with it. As seen multiple times at Traffic stops when pulling someone over or just encountering one, authorities get to racially profiling fast and as a result of that, they end up shooting and killing unarmed citizens or choking one out to where they can’t breathe or beating them to a point to where they can’t breathe.

Training and the way that authorities approach a subject should be changed as a whole because the one that has been put in place isn’t working and is causing backfires to authorities to where the citizens do not even trust or feel safe towards authorities and feel as if the authorities and police are their enemies. Also traffic cops should just be allowed to carry tasers when pulling someone over and not guns as if they are at a threat then they can just tase the individual to stop the confrontation instead of killing an innocent citizen. If the training and the way that authorities approach a citizen is changed then police and authority brutality will go down which will cause less backlash on the government and the people can trust their authorities put in place.

The rules that are set in place for police officers are there to keep them safe so there is no need for other reasons or excuses as it all has been heard, and most of everything that one could think of has already happened or one could expect. But what is not in set to help police and law enforcement officers is what is in set to help those that is going through stress due to the job or to help the officers that are traumatized due to the job. If the chief or person in charge is seeing that an officer off a little bit or that something is wrong with them the most that might be offered to that officer is time off and it has an equal chance of the officer get either paid time off or non paid time off. If it is suggested that the certain officer should take unpaid time off but they do not have the financial stability to take time off then they can not. So that officer that is stressed and traumatized due to the job and is still on the clock which not only puts their safety in jeopardy but it also puts everyone else who comes across that person in jeopardy too. That is no good and leads to nothing but more problems.

There should be better programs and benefits that come with being an officer of some kind of law enforcement. Paid time off and mandatory therapy in some cases depending on the level of mentality of one. In big police departments like the Los Angeles and the Miami police department they have such but not ones in the “ not so big cities”. When it comes to the FBI they only have therapy in Washington D.C. There should be one in every city just like the major ones.

When one becomes to be a person who becomes a police officer or an FBI agent they are supposed to be the ones who help enforce laws and authority around the nation. Their job is to help keep peace and authority and to make sure that things run smoothly throughout the nation and to help stop crime and to be a positive to criminals who think about committing a crime. But when it comes to law enforcement themselves they are treated and looked at as if they are superior to citizens and those who are not in law enforcement. With that being said they get away with things that the regular person wouldn’t get away with. They get away with crimes that others can’t and the reason behind that is because they make the government bad and when people turn on the government everything is in chaos.

The way law enforcement and authorities are looked upon when it comes to the law needs to change. They need to be treated like every other citizen is when is comes to crimes especially murder. Throughout the last couple of decades from as far as one could think the police has gotten away with things like murder with the excuse of saying they were in self defense but the evidence adds up time and time again that they were actually in no harm but still they tend to get off easy due to them being in law enforcement. They need to be held to their actions as if they were a regular citizen. Murder isn’t they only thing that they get away with when it comes to crimes but the only reason that they continue to do what they do is because of them not being held to their responsibilies.

When they are put to trial to be held responsible or not for what has been done they need to be looked at as if they were a regular citizen instead of as if they were above one that doesn’t have that job. Being a police officer is like having a job but one that comes with some responsibilities and that is a little bit more dangerous than other jobs. It is one that one signs up for and they know what they are walking into, just because one wants to be a police officer doesn’t mean they should get away with certain things. That is like saying that if one wants to do something and have a better/ high chance of getting away with it then they should be a police officer, fbi agent or some sort of law enforcer.

Not only will this change stop crimes among law enforcement and stop them from getting away with what they get away with but it will also help make the country a better place and the citizens feel safer in the place that they call home.

It is argued that what has been put in place is good and there is nothing wrong with it, the country that we live in today is safe and that it is fine how it is. It could be argued that nothing needs to change and things are good. When it comes to training and who carries a gun and who doesn’t it could be argued that nothing needs to be changed at all as it is good in the way officers and enforcement goes about things and ways in how they handle certain things. There would be big problems if things were to change with training and how things are carried out like traffic stops. If enforcement was to not have guns and things like when it came to traffic stops then it could be argued that one would not be taken seriously and the lives of the enforcement and officers could and would be put in danger.

When it comes to benefits and therapy and the way they go about handling officers of law enforcement that are dealing with stress and are traumatized it could be argued that the person knew what all came with the job and that is what they signed up for. A person shouldn’t get time off for doing what was in the job description because after all they did check the box on the application that says they can do this job to the fullest extent without any problems.

When it comes to the way cops are prosecuted for crimes and held accountable for things as if they were a regular citizen and not as if they were a cop or an agent then it could stop the amount of people that go into enforcement and law. It could be argued their lives are put in danger at a higher risk than any other career in America and because of that they are at caution more cautious which causes them to act in a different manner.

With the changes that have been explained that should take place with law enforcement and police officers not only will it help make it a safer place all around in which what they are here to do but the lives of everyone will be better all around. Officers do not have to feel as if they are not looked out for and as if they are the bad guys to the citizens eyes. The everyday person doesn’t have to feel as if their life are in jeopardy or feel as if they can not trust the people that are put into place to protect them.

Summary

In Inventing the University, David Bartolomae goes into talking about writing and basic writing problems. He about how to write and what approach to go about writing. The writer when writing must feel as if they are one with the audience for the better piece because the audience is the one that’s going to be reading it. When it comes to writing there are two ways a writer can take while writing. The first way is “base prose.” Base prose is the writer just writing for themselves to get what they are thinking down. The second way is “based prose.” Based prose is writing in the reader’s mind. He talks about these two concepts to help the readers become a better writer.

A writer can get together what they have to say around what they and the reader shares.  The writer must connect with the reader and feel what they feel. They must connect with the reader and the audience to get a feel of how to write. He believes that based prose writers are better because of writers constructing what they have to say around the reader. He then goes into saying that writers must take on the position of being an insider because that being both inside an established and powerful discourse. The problem with students doing this is that it makes them deny what reality is. Reality is that the professor really has all the power in the classroom in which they control the grade. The professor is really the audience when it comes to students writing a piece of writing. The audience is really the one that’s going to be criticizing the writing in the end.

Purpose/ Audience

The overall purpose of him writing this text was for the reader who wants to become a better writer to learn and to know what to do to get to that point. This piece is for high school to transiting college students to help them become a better writer. The article itself did affect me as a reader as I was a part of the audience, and it really gave me a big cheat code to writing. I say that because it was never known if my writing was good when I wrote it but now if I was to write from an Insider’s standpoint then it must be good.

Content Analysis

In this text, the author goes into how to become a better writer. He goes into what makes a writer a good writer and what to do to get to that point. As in the text he talks about there being two types of writing which are base and based prose. To be a good writer one would have to be an insider, think of himself as the audience. I agree with the author in every way except where he was saying the teacher is in power. Really, it’s the student who is in power as the student controls what grade they get. The teacher is the one the grades it, but it is up to the student on what grade they get.

Organization, Language, and Style

Throughout this article, the author has more of a calm, informal tone. He is just trying to get his point across. His tone really did support his point and what he was trying to get off as if he was obnoxious then I really wouldn’t have read it at all. He put it in a tone and used simple vocabulary for the most part so the reader could understand it. He puts himself in the reader’s viewpoint as writing this so that the readers would read it. He is taking his own advice when writing this text.

Evidence- Logos

In Inventing the University, Bartholomae uses Logos in this text as evidence to back what he is saying. I say that because he goes more off logic to convince the students in what he is writing about. When he goes in about how you must be an insider and put yourself in the shoes of a reader to be a good writer. That is kind of logic and common sense. Only because the readers are the ones that are going to be reading what you are writing, you have to take the view of a reader, so it is readable and relatable.

Overall (close) Assessment

What I learned from a close examination of Inventing the University was that the author was very right in what he was saying. At first, when I read this article, I did not agree with him at all as I thought that all you had to have was an imagination. It sounded like crap that you had to be an insider to become a better writer. But then as I analyze the text and actually took in what was being written it actually started to make sense and even helped me a little bit. In order to be good at writing then I would have to put myself in the shoes of who was reading it, to see what they wanted.

Conclusion

Inventing the University really didn’t relate to me as a student in the past. When was writing it is different as I had imagination and brains and with that, you can write and do anything? There is no limit to what can be done. The imagination part attracts the readers and the brains are what keeps the reader as I don’t sound stupid and they know that I know what I am talking about. But reading this really did help me as it tells me what to do in order to get past this level and maybe on to the next. With the level that I am at now, I know that I will have to follow and use what David was saying in order to get past this current class that I am in. Not only does this apply to this current class but this applies to all my classes and coursework. Now with my imagination and what David was saying, I can now be inside the readers mind.

My professors aren’t really going to give me a good grade and want to read my work if I don’t write as if the professor was the audience. If I do that then I will know what it is that they are looking for. I will also know how they look for it. If I know that then there is no question if I will pass these courses and there will be no question what I will pass it with. It is almost as if I am grading myself to a standpoint.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
